The July 2007 issue of Advance for Nurse Practitioners published an article, Writing to Get The Grant, by Jean Nagelkerk, NP which discusses the various steps it takes to get a grant. She talks about the steps to get started, the common elements of a grant, where to start and what to avoid. Take a peak at page 14.
This article also introduced me to a new book. Apparently Ms. Nagelkerk wrote a book entitled “Starting Your Practice: A Survival Guide for Nurse Practitioners” in 2006, which is where the above information was adapted from.
According to the description on Amazon.com:
“This unique resource is an ideal career-planning guide for advanced practice students, recent graduates, and practicing nurse practitioners who want to expand their careers. It’s filled with helpful guidelines and proven strategies for success in every aspect of NP practice, including certification and licensure, finding and negotiating a practice opportunity, and developing community and professional partnerships.”
My thoughts: A quick search on Google yields several options for healthcare grants. Keep in mind that grants are not often available for practice startup, especially if your practice is for profit. While it’s possible, I would not think of a grant as my primary source of funding for starting a practice.
Just wondering how many out there have had any experience with grant, especially for finding start-up funding to start a new practice. From what I am finding most require that you have to be a non-profit organization to qualify. Anyone have any information for someone trying to get funding for starting a for-prifit practice?

You can get loans for starting a for-profit clinic. You just have to have enough collateral to make them want to lend it to you. Or have a strong backer who will vouch for you (that was my scenerio and then my backer became ill with CA).

I am looking to start my own practice in 2019. I am grateful to have come across this information but I’d like to know if you have any current info to share, pointers or tips for securing funding to start a practice? Any tips on how to start a practice in a state that sadly still requires collaboration?
States requiring collaboration still have NPs starting practices, so don’t let that deter you.
