Finding and Staying in Compliance with Collaborating Physicians

As nurse practitioners (NPs), we often find ourselves navigating a complex relationship with collaborating physicians. While collaboration, when needed, is essential for optimal patient care, the requirement for formal collaboration agreements in some states has sparked debate within our profession.

Having practiced in a full practice state, I’ve experienced the benefits of voluntary collaboration. I’ve built strong relationships with specialists and primary care physicians, consulting them as needed for complex cases or areas outside my expertise. This organic approach to collaboration enhances patient care without restrictive mandates.

However, the landscape of NP practice authority varies significantly across the United States. As of July 2024, 19 states still require some form of formal physician collaboration for NPs. This number is subject to change, highlighting the importance of staying informed about your state’s specific regulations.

For many NPs in restricted practice states, finding a willing collaborating physician can be challenging, if not seemingly impossible. While various companies have emerged to address this need, it’s crucial to choose a partner that prioritizes regulatory compliance and understands the nuances of NP practice.
