Here we are again. Another year has come and now is gone.
It’s the time of year where most stop for a short while to take stock. We question how well we did over the last year.
On a personal level you may ask questions like:
- Did I eat better?
- Did I lose the extra 10 pounds?
- Did I make it to the gym at least four times a week?
- Did I spend more time with my family?
- Did I make more time for myself?
- Did I take better care of myself?
- Did I do the things that are important to me, that feed my soul?
When it comes to business, some of your questions may be:
- Did I accomplish the goals for my business?
- Did I grow my business?
- Did I hit my revenue targets?
- Did I follow my marketing plan and am I satisfied with the results?
- Did I review my financial reports enough?
- Did I build a stronger and more effective team?
- Did I serve my patients well?
- Did I…?
It’s natural to look back over the previous 12 months and evaluate.
And regardless if you just finished a tough year or if you had a great year, it’s just as natural to think of ways to improve. If possible, you want to get even better results in the next 12 months.
This is where resolutions enter the picture.
But sadly, few resolutions are ever realized. Most drop off as quickly as they were taken on. But of course, it doesn’t have to be like that.
3 Simple Strategies
Let me share three simple strategies with you. Implement them, put them to use and achieve your goals for the next year.
- Identify the top 3 things you want to change or accomplish; this may be personal or business. Pick the areas of focus most important to you. Give this plenty of thought, make it count. These three topics are the things you will focus on over the next year; they will have your undivided attention. The underlying principle is this. It’s far more effective to focus on less so you can accomplish more, instead of doing more and accomplishing less.
- Go for the small wins. Small wins pay off big! It’s far more satisfying to accomplish something small every single day then having a single win in a month. Let’s say you want to improve the effectiveness of your team. Which approach do you think is more effective? Calling a weekly staff meeting where both you and your employees can voice concerns and exchange ideas. Or scheduling a single meeting for the calendar year? The weekly meeting wins every time, hands down. Granted, the example above is extreme. However, it gets across the basic idea. Big wins are nothing more than the sum total of many small wins. Small steps taken frequently will lead to accomplishing bigger goals over time.
- Examine your habits. Do your habits support what you’ll be focusing on in the New Year? A habit is something you do over and over again, automatically, without much thought. At times we mindlessly repeat behaviors, for no other reason than it’s what we’ve always done. Let me give you an example. You probably know how easy it is to come home from a long day at the office. You grab a bite to eat, drop onto the couch and get hypnotized by TV… for hours. If you are focusing on getting in shape in the New Year, then watching TV is the behavior that’s in direct competition with your goal of exercising. Ask yourself if your current habits support or sabotage your goals. Make sure you link your habits to your goals and create behaviors aligned with your goals.
Here you have it… three simple, yet effective strategies.
Put these simple strategies to work for you. If you do, you are far more likely to stick with your resolutions and accomplish your goals.
