Collaborating Physician Malpractice Question – NJ

by Barbara C. Phillips, NP on June 23, 2008

Here is a question from a colleague in NJ. Please post to the blog if you have information that may be of assistance. I suspect this is a situation that many NPs are facing.

I am a NP in private practice, in Phillipsburg, NJ.  My collaborating physician claims his malpractice insurance company wants to significantly raise his rates because of our collaborating agreement.  buy adipex
buy ambien
buy levitra
buy ultram
tramadol online
buy xanax
buy valium
buy meridia
buy fioricet
buy zoloft

I would like to know if this has happened to anyone else who is in private practice.  I am also looking for a back-up collaborator, just incase he wants out of our agreement, because of the increased rates.  Does anyone know of how I can find another physician licensed in NJ that might be interested in collaborating with me.  The other area physicians are not interested, plus most see me as competition and want me out of business anyway.
Thanks for your help.

Again, if you have any suggestions, please respond to the post. Thanks!

I think that she needs to contact the malpractice insurance companies directly and ask their rates. It may be an excuse not to collaborate instead of a real money issue.

I am a pain management nurse practitioner trying to start her own practice in niagara falls new york , does anyone know the best way to go about finding a callorating physician in my area. How did other NP’s find their collaborating physicians?

Veronica,

Many NPs are talking with physicians who they already have a working relationship with. I assume you will be doing pain management? If so, you likely need to find a physician who is in your specialty. Of course, you may need to go into Buffalo to find someone.

Best wishes, and keep us posted.

I wonder if your MD is trying to charge you more indirectly for the collaboration agreement? Have you considered going to a state that does not require this? Lets network please. ~ JT

I have a billing issue concerning claims sent in under NP. I am getting denials from ins co requesting the collaborating physicians name on the claim, I have never encounterd this problem in the past 30 years. Does anyone have an answer where the collaborating MD’s name should appear on the HCFA form , Excellus has no idea but wants claims billed this way!!

There is an area on the CMS 1500 where it asks for the Ordering and rendering providers. Put his name in the “ordering provider” space.

How difficult is it to start a cash only business without a collaborating physician

Faith, if your state requires you to have a collaborating physician, then you must do so. It does not matter what your financial business model is.

When starting a practice of any kind, you need to do quite a bit of research to determine the feasibility of doing so. You’ll need to look at the need in the community, resources that are available to the community and yourself and how you’ll be able to market yourself.

Hope that helps!
