Practice Across State Lines?

We received this question from a Nurse Practitioner in New York State.
I am licensed in NY & NJ, and have a business in NY. My collaborator is licensed only in NY. My business can be portable (laser). Does anyone know if I can practice in NJ while my collaborator is not licensed in that state?

Hi there,
I am familiar with these type of state issues (especially in NY since that is where my practice is). I would say that you are not allowed to practice in any other state unless you meet those necessary state requirements (i.e. in this case, a collaborating physician in the state where the actual practice/procedures are taking place.) If one doesn’t meet those necessary requirements, it would be considered practicing without a license (eventhough you are licensed yet don’t meet that state’s collaborating requirements).
If you are member of the NYS Nurse Practitioner Association (www.thenpa.org), you can e-mail their practice issues consultant and they may be able to give you more specific information/references. If you’re not a member, now might be a good time to join!
My advice would be to find a NJ collaborating physician. I’d be happy to answer any other questions you may have.
